Water management in Rice :

  • Varies upon the soil types , growing season , nature of varieties , climates , etc.
  • A study indicated that about 1250 mm (nursery 40 mm , puddling 200mm , rice yield during period = 1000 mm) of water is needed for a variety that mature in 135 days.

The critical stages of water requirement are :

  1. Seedling stage
  2. Tillering stage
  3. Panicle initiation to flowering stage
  4. Milk dough stage.

Most sensitive stage for water is from 20 days before heading to 10 days after heading.

  • Establishment of seedlings at a depth of 2-5 cm.
  • There after about 5 cm of water should be maintained upto dough stage of the crop.
  • Water should be drained from the field 7-15 days before harvest depending on the soil type to encourage quick and uniform maturity of grains.
