About Lesson
Water management in Rice :
- Varies upon the soil types , growing season , nature of varieties , climates , etc.
- A study indicated that about 1250 mm (nursery 40 mm , puddling 200mm , rice yield during period = 1000 mm) of water is needed for a variety that mature in 135 days.
The critical stages of water requirement are :
- Seedling stage
- Tillering stage
- Panicle initiation to flowering stage
- Milk dough stage.
Most sensitive stage for water is from 20 days before heading to 10 days after heading.
- Establishment of seedlings at a depth of 2-5 cm.
- There after about 5 cm of water should be maintained upto dough stage of the crop.
- Water should be drained from the field 7-15 days before harvest depending on the soil type to encourage quick and uniform maturity of grains.
