Types of Biological control

  1. Inundation: It involves the use of large numbers of organisms over a short time to suppress or destroy a population.
  2. Augmentation: it is being the supplement to an existing natural population, that has the power to control a pest or disease.

Approaches used for biological control of pests and diseases

  1. Direct: Introduction of antagonists able to suppress the activity of insects and pathogens.
  2. Indirect: Manipulation of the microbial balance using crop practices, cultural measures, soil supplements, etc.
  3. Host-mediated: Induction of localized and systemic resistance, virus cross-protection.

Bio-pesticides

  • Bio-pesticides are certain types of pesticides derived from such natural materials as animals, plants, bacteria, and certain minerals.
  • Bio-pesticides fall into 5 major classes.s
  1. Microbial pesticides
  2. Plant-incorporated-protectants (PIPs)
  3. Biochemical pesticides
  4. Botanical pesticides
  5. Biotic agents (parasitoids and predators)
  • Thus, microbial pesticides botanical pesticides, or biotic agents either alone or in combination are known as bio-pesticides.
