About Lesson
Types of Biological control
- Inundation: It involves the use of large numbers of organisms over a short time to suppress or destroy a population.
- Augmentation: it is being the supplement to an existing natural population, that has the power to control a pest or disease.
Approaches used for biological control of pests and diseases
- Direct: Introduction of antagonists able to suppress the activity of insects and pathogens.
- Indirect: Manipulation of the microbial balance using crop practices, cultural measures, soil supplements, etc.
- Host-mediated: Induction of localized and systemic resistance, virus cross-protection.
Bio-pesticides
- Bio-pesticides are certain types of pesticides derived from such natural materials as animals, plants, bacteria, and certain minerals.
- Bio-pesticides fall into 5 major classes.s
- Microbial pesticides
- Plant-incorporated-protectants (PIPs)
- Biochemical pesticides
- Botanical pesticides
- Biotic agents (parasitoids and predators)
- Thus, microbial pesticides botanical pesticides, or biotic agents either alone or in combination are known as bio-pesticides.
