Semi-intensive fish farming system

  • Involves rather small ponds ( 0.2-0.5 hectares) with higher stocking density ( 7000-10000 fish/ha).
  • Care is taken to develop natural foods by fertilization and feeds are supplemented.
  • Yield is moderate ( 3-6 tons/ha/year) and survival is high.

Intensive fish farming system

  • Well-managed form of fish farming.
  • Attempts to achieve maximum production with a minimum quantity of water.
  • Very high stocking density ( 10-15 fish/m3 of water).
  • Fed on completely formulated feed and natural feed is of minor importance.
  • Use of aerators and provided highly nutritious feed.
  • Yield is 15-100 tons/ha/year or more.

Advantages

  • High production per unit area.
  • Permits great control over the size of the fish to be produced.
  • Less water surface area is required.
  • Less FCR.
  • Control of weeds and disease is easier.
  • Easy to harvest.

Disadvantages

  • High investment per unit area.
  • Higher level of management cost
  • More risk of oxygen depletion
  • More chances of epizootic disease and parasites due to overcrowding.
  • Large nutrient load in effluents
  • High energy cost
  • Risky business
  • Skilled manpower is required.
