Sugarcane root bore (Polycha/Emmalocera depressella, Pyralidae, Lepidoptera) Damaging stage: Larva

Damaging symptoms: dead heart offensive smell, larva attack generally side tiller than main or mature side shoot.

Identification:

  • Egg: single on the upper and lower surface of the leaf.
  • Larva: creamy white with yellowish head
  • Pupa: inside root, soil
  • Adult: brown, 2 black spots on forewings.

 

Management:

  • Egg parasitoid: Trichogramma chilonis
  • Larval parasitoid: echelons spp, stenbraccon seesaw
  • Pupal parasitoid: Ichneumonidae
  • Pheromone trap
  • Chlorpyrifos 20EC ,carbofuran (1.5 kg/ha)
  • Neem seed kernel extract 10%
