Phi-coefficient

  • Is used to measure effect size and strength of relationship.
  • Is measure of association between two binary variables.
  • Is used for contingency tables, when

a) At least one variable is a normal variable

b) Both variables are dichotomous variable.

  • Is used to calculate two opposite behaviors of a variable. Eg: White/ Black , Living/Dead, Success / Failure, etc.

 

Note:

  1. Correlation : To find relationship between two continuous variables.
  2. Regression : To find relationship between all types of variables ( Dependent and independent).
  3. Phi-coefficient: To find relationship between two binary variables.
