Introduction
Metabolism is a general term given to the sequence of chemical processes that take place in the living organism. These reactions continue as far as the living body exists. These processes can be categorized into three.
- Anabolism; describes the metabolic processes in which complex compounds are synthesized from simpler substances.
- Catabolism; describes metabolic processes that involve the degradation or breaking down of complex compounds into simpler molecules.
- Waste product transformation; as a result of the above two metabolic processes, waste products arise which have to be chemically transformed and ultimately excreted.
The reactions are necessary for such transformation from the general part of metabolism. For example, when protein is catabolized, ammonia is liberated which cannot be excreted as it is. It has to be transformed into urea which is categorized as 3rd type of metabolism.
