Harvesting and threshing :
Maturity indices of crop can be expressed by :
a) Moisture content of seed by measuring with moisture meter , 18-20 %.
b) Days after phenological stages
c) Physical method : Hard and brittle seed , dry and brittle straw , ease of seperation of grains.
d) Visual method : Color and dryness of seed , spikes , spikelet , leaf , 95% peduncle are yellow.
Harvesting and Post harvest
Harvesting is done by serrated sickle, brush cutter or reaper
Threshing is done by trampling, beating on log, peddle thresher or wheat
thresher. Harvesting and Threshing can be done by combine harvester
Processing includes: drying, cleaning, packaging and storage
Drying : Drying for seed moisture content is reduced upto 12 % and for grain 10-12 %, grains are sun-dried on threshing floor for 2-3 days.
Cleaning : It is the process of separation of undesirable materials from grains.
Packaging : Should be done in air proof bags like super grain bags where there is innner lastic linings and protects from insect , pest and pathogen.
Storage : Done in store house / Bhakari / ware house / deri.
Almunium Phosphide (celphos) is used to protect grain from storage insects pest. It is applied 2-3 tablets per tons of grains.
