Mango stem boror (Bactrocera rufomaculata , cermbycidae, coleoptera)

  • Mango, jackfruit, Apple,
  • Polyphagous

Damaging stage:- Grub(inside stem parts) Adult (twin and petiole)

Damaging symptom:- Zigzag burrowing beneath the bark and tunneling into the trunk of the main stem, moving upward and feeding internal tissue, Grub reaching to tap wood. Infested stem die.

Identification –

  • Egg:- Brownish white egg, on barks or in crevices in the trunk ( egg laying time July –August)
  • Larva:- yellowish white.
  • Pupa:- inside the trunk.
  • Adult –
    • long antennae, reaching to at least the end of the body.
    • Dirty yellowish spot on Elytra 
    • The heads are prominent eyes and protonum with two crescent orange-yellow spots.

 

Management:-

  • loose bark and dry branches from the tree
  • insert the long wire into the hole on the tree to kill the larva and pupa inside .
  • Inject 5 ml of kerosene or petrol with cotton into hole and close the hole with mud.
  • Imidacloprid 8% sl @ 1ml/L of water, thiamethoxam 25% WG @ 1g/L of water for 5 times starting from 2nd week of asar (july ) at 15-day intervals.
