Teaching and learning situation

  • Will occur if the extension educator creates an appropriate teaching-learning situation.
  • The effective extension educator can create and manage learning situations in which learners have effective learning experiences
  • The effective teaching-learning situation has five essential elements (Legans, 1960)
  1. An effective instructor or leader
  2. Learners who want and need to learn
  3. Content or subject matter which is suitable to learners
  4. Appropriate instruction equipment and materials
  5. An appropriate physical environment

Lardizabal (1999) mentioned that the teacher is responsible for creating an atmosphere, where the learning can be facilitated. In addition to physical facilities following atmosphere facilitates learning.

  1. Encourages learner to be active
  2. Promotes and facilitate the individual’s discovery of the personal meaning of the ideas
  3. Different ideas can be discussed but not necessarily accepted
  4. Consistently recognizes the individual’s right to make mistakes
  5. Evaluation is a cooperative process
  6. Individuals feel they are respected and accepted
