Nature of genetic code
- There are 64 codons for 20 amino acids. 61 codons are informational.
- The codons UAA, UAG, and UGA are stop signals causing chain termination and release from the ribosome of the nascent polypeptide.
- Polypeptide chain initiation is always encoded by AUG.
- Mutations that are simple base, substitution may be neutral.
- The message is read in 5’ à 3’ direction.
