About Lesson
Polyunsaturated Fatty acids
- Linoleic acid ( Δ9, 12)
- Arachidonic acid ( Δ5,8, 11, 14)
- Potent aggregating agent
- Inhibits coagulation and thrombosis
- Serves as precursors of a group of biochemically active compounds such as prostaglandins, prostacyclin, thromboxane, and leukotrienes.
3. Linolenic acid ( Δ9,12,15)
- Decreases the risk of heart disease.
- Decreases platelet aggregation.
Types of Linolenic Acid
i. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)
- Occurs in marine lipids.
- Increases inflammatory responses.
- Inhibits chemotactic and aggregating activities of neutrophils.
ii. Docosohexaenoic acid (DHA)
- Occurs principally in lipids of the Nervous system.
