About Lesson
Reactions promoted by radiation
- UV light induces the condensation of two ethylene groups to form a cyclobutene ring.
i.e. Adjacent pyrimidine –radiation– à cyclobutene pyrimidine dimers.
- Ionization radiations can cause ring openings and fragmentation of bases.
Note: DNA –Replication – DNA
DNA — Transcription — RNA – Translation —Protein
- Alkylating agents can alter certain bases of DNA.
- Dimethyl sulfate can methylate a guanine to yield O6-methylguanine which can’t base pair with cytosine.
