Structure and cell wall composition of bacteria E. coli ( Gram-negative)

  • The cell is surrounded by a plasma membrane.
  • No sub-cellular organelles, only the infolding of plasma membrane called mesosomes.
  • DNA is within cytosol to form nucleoids.
  • 2µm long and less than 1 µm in diameter.
  • Has a protective outer membrane and an inner plasma membrane.
  • Between the membrane is a thin but stronger layer of peptidoglycan ( Peptidoglycan gives cell shape and rigidity).
  • Plasma membranes contain proteins capable of transporting certain ions and compounds into the cell and transporting wastes out.
  • Flagella helps in the movement of the bacteria.
  • DNA is 1000 times longer than the cell.
  • The mesosome is the site of DNA replication.
  • Mesosomes contain protein and pigment to trap light and generate ATP.
