About Lesson
Structure and cell wall composition of bacteria E. coli ( Gram-negative)
- The cell is surrounded by a plasma membrane.
- No sub-cellular organelles, only the infolding of plasma membrane called mesosomes.
- DNA is within cytosol to form nucleoids.
- 2µm long and less than 1 µm in diameter.
- Has a protective outer membrane and an inner plasma membrane.
- Between the membrane is a thin but stronger layer of peptidoglycan ( Peptidoglycan gives cell shape and rigidity).
- Plasma membranes contain proteins capable of transporting certain ions and compounds into the cell and transporting wastes out.
- Flagella helps in the movement of the bacteria.
- DNA is 1000 times longer than the cell.
- The mesosome is the site of DNA replication.
- Mesosomes contain protein and pigment to trap light and generate ATP.
