About Lesson
Climate
- Optimum temperature for growth and development is 20 0
- Oil content maximum at 10-15 0
- 15-22 0C during flowering to seed formation is better.
- Temperature > 40 0C is harmful.
- Frost affects flowers, pollen formation and viability and reduces oil content.
- Shading reduces number of flowers, pods, seed per pods and pod size.
- Cannot withstand water logging specially at seedling and vegetative stage.
Soil
- Grown on wide range of soils; alluvial soils (entisols, inceptisols), altisols (red loams) and well drained vertisols (black soils).
- Ideal soil: light sandy loams and loam with OM
- Can grow in red soils without crust formation
- Prefer neutral pH.
- High water table and high residual moisture not desirable.
