About Lesson

Climate

  • Optimum temperature for growth and development is 20 0
  • Oil content maximum at 10-15 0
  • 15-22 0C during flowering to seed formation is better.
  • Temperature > 40 0C is harmful.
  • Frost affects flowers, pollen formation and viability and reduces oil content.
  • Shading reduces number of flowers, pods, seed per pods and pod size.
  • Cannot withstand water logging specially at seedling and vegetative stage.

Soil

  • Grown on wide range of soils; alluvial soils (entisols, inceptisols), altisols (red loams) and well drained vertisols (black soils).
  • Ideal soil: light sandy loams and loam with OM
  • Can grow in red soils without crust formation
  • Prefer neutral pH.
  • High water table and high residual moisture not desirable.
