Land Preparation
- Well aerated, fine, firm, moist and weed free seed bed is recommended.
- 1-2 deep ploughing (20 cm) followed by 3-4 harrowing or ploughing, each ploughing followed by planking.
Seed and sowing
- True to type, bold, viable and vigorous, moisture containing.
- Seed treatment with thiram or captan @ 2.5 g or Bavistin @ 2g/kg seed.
Sowing time
- If rainfed, after the cessation of monsoon.
- Rapeseed: mid to last Sept
- Mustard/Sarson/Rai: early to mid Oct.
- Delay in sowing cause reduced branching, pods per plant, seed size.

Spacing
- Sole cropping: 30-45 x 10-15 cm.
- Tori: 30 x 10-15 cm and Sarson/Rai: 45 x10-15
Sowing depth
- 2-3 cm is ideal.
- Deeper sowing delays and reduces germination.
Seed rate
- Seed rate: 5-7 kg/ha (sole cropping) and 3-4 kg/ha (intercropping)
- Optimum plant population: 80-100 plants/m2.
