Irrigation/water management

  • Raised majorly as rainfed crop.
  • Excess irrigation enhances vegetative growth and reduce grain yield.
  • Avoid sprinkler irrigation.
  • Two irrigation, one each at branching and pod forming stages.

Weeds and their management

  • Cause 40-100% loss.
  • Includes:

a) Chenopodium album

b) Lathyrus sp

c) Vicia sativa

d) Phalaris minor

e) Circium arvense

f) Cynodon dactylon

g) Cyperus rotundus

  • 2 hand weeding 25-30 DAS and 60 DAS.
  • Pre-plant herbicide : Basaline @ 1 Kg a.i./ha in 800-1000 liter of water.
  • Pre-emergence herbicide: Fluchloralin @ 1 kg a.i./ha or Pendimethylin @ 1-1.5 kg a.i./ha in 400-600 liter of water.

Insects

  1. Pod borer
  2. Cut worm

Diseases

  1. Fusarium wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp ciceri)
  2. Collar rot (Sclerotium rolfsii)
  3. Dry root rot (Rhizoctonia bataticola)
  4. Ascochyta blight (Ascochyta rabiei)
  5. Botrytis grey mold (Botrytis cinerea)

Harvesting and Threshing

  • Maturity indices: yellowish pod, reddish brown leaves and leaves shedding.
  • Cut at ground level or uprooting.
  • Sun dried for 4-6 days/
  • Threshing by sticks, bullocks or combine harvester and then winnowed.

Yield

  • 600-700 kg/ha.
  • 5-3 t/ha in improved practices.
