Ethylene

  • The only ripening hormone.
  • Highly useful in inducing fruit ripening
  • Auxins increase ethylene levels in plants and auxin actions are attributed to ethylene such as an increased percentage of female flowers, apical bud dominance, and leaf epinasty.

Physiological effects of ethylene

  • Stimulation of ripening of fleshy fruits
  • Abscission of leaves
  • Inhibition of stem elongation
  • Stimulation of radial swelling of stems
  • Inhibition of root growth
  • Stimulation of flowering
  • Stimulation of leaf epinasty
