The Ultimo-Branchial Gland

  • Typically, the gland is small and paired and is situated in the transverse septum between the abdominal cavity and sinus venosus just ventral to the esophagus or near the thyroid gland.
  • Embryonically the gland develops from the haryngeal epithelium near the fifth gill arch.
  • The gland secretes the hormone calcitonin which regulates calcium metabolism.
