About Lesson
Use of pituitary hormones in induced breeding
- The pituitary hormones have practical applications by injecting and implanting to force or stimulate spawning of certain fishes of great economic value, such as trouts (Salmoninae), catfishes (Ictaluridae), Mullets (Mugliliade), and sturgeons (Acipenseridae).
- The synthesis of sex hormones in the gonad is controlled by pituitary gonadotropin.
- Hence pituitary extract containing GTH is taken from sexually mature male or female fish and then injected into the same species for inducing hastening and spawning.
- For the preparation of pituitary extract, closely related species may also be used as donors.
