Natural resource management

  • refers to the sustainable utilization of major natural resources, such as land, water, air, minerals, fisheries wild flora, and fauna, together with these resources providing ecosystem services to human beings.
  • Integrated NRM is a process of managing natural resources in a systematic way, which includes multiple aspects of natural resources use (biophysical, socio-economics, and economic) to meet the production goals of the producers and other direct users (food, security, profitability, and economics) as well as goals of the wider community (poverty alleviation, welfare of future generations, environment conservation).

Types of natural resources:

a) Renewable resources (trees, fish, wildlife, water, agriculture, livestock, etc.

b) Non-renewable resources – Coal, gas, oil, minerals, soil, etc.

Management must provide for the long-term protection of these natural resources, otherwise,e they may depleted or damaged for future use.
