CONSTRAINTS OF ORGANIC FARMING

1.Lack of adequate information

  • Organic products, crop and area on organic cultivation, technology of organic farming, marketing, suppliers of inputs etc.

 

2.Lack of production technology

  • Lack of adequate research on farming practices.
  • The development of package of practices (POP) in different crops and varieties
  • Inputs like organic seeds, bio-fertilizers and bio-pesticides

 

  1. Lack of government initiatives, policies and assistance
  • The norms and standards on inspection and certification in organic agriculture have not been established yet at government level.
  • Nepal government has given less priority to organic agriculture compare to inorganic agriculture.
  • There is no special provision of supports like subsidy for seed and organic fertilizers, compensation for crops, awards to the farmers etc.

 

  1. Labor intensive farming
  • Urban and in rural areas where the scarcity of labor exist the cost of cultivation might be high.

 

  1. Option to improve food security
  • The belief of people that organic agriculture is not a feasible option to improve food security. i.e farmers are hesitating to accept new organic technologies.

 

6.Awareness

  • Lack of consumer’s and the producer’s awareness, usefulness and benefits of organic products.
