Selection Based on individuality

  • Selection based on individuality means selecting an individual based on their phenotypic values (appearance/type of production performance). This is otherwise known as the Performance test.

Limitations

  1. It is difficult to practice if the trait is sex-limited e.g. milk production or litter size.
  2. Individual selection is not effective if the heritability of traits is low.
  3. It cannot be practiced for carcass traits.
