About Lesson
Factors affecting water erosion
- Rainfall:
- Both detachment and transportation process take place by the influence of heavy rainfall.
- Greater the intensity of rain, the larger the size of diameter drop.
- Vegetation:
- Vegetation is most important factor for influencing soil erosion.
- Vegetation helps to protect the soil aggregates from detachment or breakdown.
- In addition, plant roots bind the soil particles and vegetation add the organic matter in to the soil which helps for binding the soil aggregates.
- Soils:
- topography is the most important character that influences runoff and sediment transport. Higher the degree and length of slope there will be higher amount of runoff and extent of erosion due to higher force of gravity.
- Man and beast:
- Man, and beast are responsible for soil erosion by extractive farming and excessive grazing.
- Faulty farming practices like cultivation on steep slopes, cultivation along the slope, cutting and burning the forests lead to heavy erosion.
- Excessive grazing by wild as well as domesticated animals destroys all the vegetation and leaving the land bare for ravages of erosion.
