About Lesson
Farm Yard Manure (FYM)
- FYM refers to the well-decomposed mixture of dung, urine, farm litter (bedding materials) and left over materials from roughages and fodder fed to the cattle.
- On an average well-rotted FYM contains 0.5%, 0.25% and 0.5% N, P and K respectively.
- Some factors affecting composition of FYM are: kind of animal, age and condition of animal, animal feed, kind and amount of litter used, digestibility of the feed consumed or function of animal, handling and storage procedure of manure etc.
Reasons of getting small quantity of FYM in Nepalese situation
- Large proportion of cattle dung is dropped out side of farm where cattle are grazing on uncultivated land.
- Dung is dried into dung cakes and they are burnt as fuel.
- Urine is not properly conserved.
- No proper decomposition of manure.
- Leaching during the rains and drying during the hot months that led to the loss of nutrients.
