- Weeds are unwanted and undesirable plants which interfere with the utilization of land and water resources and thus adversely affect human welfare”
- It has following characteristics:
a) Weeds are extremely noxious, useless and unwanted.
b) Weeds are persistent and resistant to control.
c) Remain dormant and viable for several years (grassy weeds for 10 years and broad-leaved weeds for 50 years).
d) Weeds are prolific or having high reproductive capacity.
e) Some weeds have very deep roots.
f) Some weeds propagated vegetatively.
g) Some weed seeds are very similar to crop seeds.
h) Weeds have competitive and aggressive habits.
i) Dispersal of weed seeds exposes weeds to different ecosystems.
j) Weeds are hardy and resist to adverse climatic, soil and disease conditions.
k) Weeds are self-sown plants.
l) Evasiveness of weed because of their better taste, disagreeable odour, and spiny nature and mimicry.
