Extensive fish farming system
- Is the least-managed form of fish farming in which little care is taken about its improvement.
- Large ponds measuring 1 to 5 hectares in area with stocking density limited to only less than 7000 fish/ha.
- No supplemental feeding or fertilization.
- Yield is poor ( 1-2 tons/ha/year).
- Survival is low with low investment cost and income.
Advantages
- Less investment is required.
- Less labor is required.
- Low risk of oxygen depletion
- Low chances of disease and parasite outbreak.
Disadvantages
- Low production
- Less control over the size of fish
- Large water surface area required
- Risk of predation
- Difficult to control weeds and diseases
- Difficult to harvest
