Raceway culture

  • Defined as raising of fish in running water.
  • High production system in which fish are grown in higher stocking density.
  • An abundant flow of good quality, well-oxygenated water is essential to provide the respiratory requirements of high-density fish to flush out the metabolic wastes from fish and feed.
  • There are two types: a linear type with ponds arranged in sequence and a lateral type with ponds laid out in parallel.
  • The most preferred species is rainbow trout.

Raising rainbow trout in raceway culture

  • Clean and cold water is essential for trout culture.
  • Water temperature must be 10-200C but the optimum for best growth is 15-180
  • Has dissolved oxygen level ≥8 mg/L.
  • The appropriate water depth is 60-90 cm.
  • Stocking density varies from 50-100 fry/m2.
  • Generally, 35-40% CP is necessary for trout fish.
  • Young trout (<30 g) needs to feed 3-10 % of body weight per day where 1-2% is sufficient for bigger ones.
  • Thin out and grading the stock is done to reduce cannibalism.
  • Reach marketable size (200-300 g) within 12-14 months from free-swimming larvae.
  • Production varies from 100-200 metric tons per hectare per year.
