Materials and non materials approaches to Development
- Material output approach:
- Poverty will be eradicated, if we follow the traditional (World Bank) approach emphasizing the need for increases in the income generation i.e. productivity.
- There is fundamental assumption that development may be attained mainly through economic growth in order to attain quality of life and to achieve political goals.
2. Human resource development approach:
- Productivity is not a sufficient condition for development. Past experience has shown that productivity has not benefited the majority of the people and that the poor have less chances to benefit from economic growth.
- Essentially and specifically through the process of industrializing the rural economic equitably i. e. economic development and social justice.
- The second path is slow and full of conflict since it needs a process like empowerment.
- Empowerment is the “long term strategic process of economic power complementary to or in competition with traditional centers.” Briefly, it means the promotion of true democratic power at the rural community level through genuine participation.
